NEW AND COMMON SCAMS IN THE DJ SERVICE INDUSTRY
The DJ Company will have you sign a contract for a low price for your event.
You think everything is fine. You think you saved money and found the one incredible "too good to be true" deal.
One week prior to the event, they inform you that...
There is $100.00 (or higher) equipment set-up and break-down fee or you must pay
an extra $50.00 for gas.
You must tip the DJ at 20% - That is the rule even if they are bad, late, rude, etc.
If you want a wireless microphone, it is an extra $75.00.
The DJ company knew you would need this from the beginning.
On the date of your event, you learn...
The specific DJ that the company promised you is now unavailable -- (He broke his arm, left the country, is in jail or whatever reason they can make up). This DJ was actually never available for your event. They knew that from the beginning too. The company sends an un-trained, totally un-prepared DJ to host your event... You get ripped off.
The DJ Company has officially shut down for business... Good luck ever finding the original owners or your deposit money. Of course, the phone number is disconnected too.
Your DJ shows up with bad sounding speakers and/or his equipment breaks. This is the most common one that we hear from every hall. DJ's don't understand electronics, ohms, resistance, impedance, or know how to match equipment. They have mismatched gear and it BLOWS UP, quite literally at your event. (Yes, this really happens!)
Your DJ shows up and makes an idiot out of himself. He thinks he is a "STAR" and everyone is at the wedding/event to see him perform. Even worse, the DJ does not have the music you were looking to hear. The DJ did not tell you that he did not own a lot of the types of music you described.
Car Salesman Mentality -- Many DJ companies are ran by DJ's who are nothing more than great salesmen. They actually lack true DJ talent, experience and training. The DJ/Salesman sells you smoothly with false promises.... OUCH! They even offer you free trinkets or other low-cost items as a vice to win you over. It's very unfortunate but this happens too often in this industry. It's very easy for almost anyone to become a "Professional DJ", create a website, start finding new clients, etc.
Make sure that the DJ Company offers a Professional Contract (not a sales advertisement) that discusses important factors for your event. You need to guarantee how important events will be handled in the event of an emergency. Does the DJ have Liability Insurance? This info should be in writing. Other factors like set-up time, bringing back-up equipment, etc. should be discussed and put in writing in your contract.
